would it be possible to integrate a configuration
option for manual selection of a sound device such as
/dev/dsp or /dev/dsp1 .
Nowadays, many people are running systems with 2
soundcards (one onboard, one external at pci), so it
would be nice to be able to specify which device should
be used for playback.

-ao dsound:device=2 where 2 is the number of the soundcard you want to use. mplayer -ao dsound -v file.avi will print a list.
